Austrian Hospital, Triol Kliniken Benefits from Conversion to LED Lighting
Nov 22, 2019
For the conversion to LED lighting in the state hospital Innsbruck, the Tirol Kliniken are relying on LEDVANCE. The use of around 6,000 new energy-efficient LED luminaires from LEDVANCE so far not only ensures higher lighting quality in the various areas of the hospital, but also energy savings of up to 50 percent in lighting. The simple installation of the luminaires and the low maintenance requirements offer additional advantages.
The Tirol Kliniken are an international center for cutting-edge medicine and the backbone of Tyrolean health care. The associated regional hospitals in Innsbruck, Hall and Hochzirl-Natters, for example, care for around 120,000 inpatients and 1.1 million ambulatory patients annually under the motto “State of the art medicine in the heart of the Alps”. As part of a comprehensive energy management strategy, the Tirol Kliniken are planning to gradually reduce the fossil share of total energy consumption compared to the base year 2013. For energy efficiency in the area of electricity, the expansion of LED lighting is one of the measures being taken for the supported locations.
6,000 new luminaires from LEDVANCE: an important part of the solution
As part of the conversion more energy-efficient LED lighting, around 6,000 LED luminaires from LEDVANCE have been installed at the state hospital in Innsbruck so far – including LED Panel luminaires, Damp Proof luminaires and LED Downlights. The luminaires not only provide more intense, homogeneous light, but also energy savings of up to 50 percent compared to their predecessors. The electricity meter in the underground car park of the gynecological and head clinic provides concrete figures: the savings there are around 150,000 kWh/a, further optimized by zone presence detectors. Also, the heat radiation is significantly lower, which has made it possible to reduce the use of cooling systems. The conversion also makes sense in the long term: the renewal of the lighting system means that the lighting no longer needs to be replaced for a long period, as the new LED luminaires have a service life of up to 50,000 hours (L70/B50). This saves further costs.
Patrick Hörhager, Energy Manager of the Tirol Kliniken, says: “Our energy strategy is not only based on large-scale measures but also on many smaller measures that can be implemented quickly and easily. An important component here is the conversion of lighting to LED technology. Within the framework of the statutory procurement guidelines, we also rely on LED luminaires from LEDVANCE, among other things, which now make their contribution to sustainably reducing electricity consumption.”
High lighting quality for increased comfort
The new LEDVANCE luminaires increase the quality of light in the state hospital Innsbruck in various areas. In the underground car parks of the gynecological and head clinic, the Medical Centre and the Surgical Centre West, the old lighting was replaced by new 30-Watt LED Damp Proof luminaires. Thanks to their robust design with IP65-protection and IK08-impact resistance, these luminaires are not only ideal for a use in damp and dusty environments, but also provide a homogeneous light in neutral white 4,000 Kelvin thanks to their 105-degree wide beam angle. The resulting homogeneous illumination of the underground car parks provides an improved feeling of security, especially for the female hospital staff.
New LED Panel luminaires (1200 mm, 33 W) for the grid ceilings provide uniform, wide-area basic lighting in a pleasant neutral white in the dining hall and support the visually appealing presentation of the various dishes with their good colour rendering (CRI>80). Thanks to the excellent glare control of the LED Panels (Unified Glare Rating <19), employees benefit from a high level of visual comfort in the checkout and distribution areas. Also, LED Downlights (25 watts) for general lighting with 4,000 Kelvin are used in this area.
The corridors and elevator areas of the Central Supply Building and the Surgery Elevator Centre were equipped with new LED Panel luminaires (1200 mm) and LED Downlights. Thanks to the diffuse light distribution with a wide beam angle, the new luminaires produce very uniform light. As important circulation areas such as the elevators are additionally emphasized by light, orientation is easier for staff and patients
Finally, Patrick Hörhager sums up why LEDVANCE has been chosen as supplier: “We opted for LEDVANCE’s LED luminaires because the price/performance ratio is good and the delivery times for these technologically modern products were very short. The selected luminaires are not only much more energy efficient and emit a much brighter and more even light than the previous traditional lighting, but they are also easy to install and significantly reduce maintenance.”
