Product Care Recycling Launches New Light Bulb Recycling Program Across Nova Scotia

October 10, 2024

Product Care Recycling is excited to announce the launch of a new light bulb recycling program for residents across Nova Scotia.

This program allows residents to drop off their burnt-out light bulbs for free at recycling locations across the province.

Nova Scotia is the latest province to introduce an extended producer responsibility (EPR) program for lighting products, joining British Columbia, Manitoba, Ontario, Quebec, and Prince Edward Island. These programs are designed to provide residents with easy access to hundreds of recycling locations across Canada to ensure the proper disposal of various types of light bulbs and tubes, helping to protect the environment.

“Launching this program in Nova Scotia marks a significant step forward in our mission to promote sustainable recycling practices across Canada,” said Mannie Cheung, VP Operations at Product Care Recycling. “We are thrilled to offer residents a convenient way to recycle their burnt-out bulbs, contributing to the protection of our environment and the conservation of valuable resources.”

The Nova Scotia program accepts a wide range of lighting products, including compact fluorescent lights (CFLs), light-emitting diodes (LEDs), incandescent and halogen bulbs, fluorescent tubes, and more. Once collected, the lighting products start their recycling journey here in Canada.

Recycling light bulbs offers several important benefits. By recycling these materials, we reduce the amount of waste that ends up in landfills, conserving landfill space and protecting the environment. The component materials, such as aluminum and glass, can be recovered and reused. Additionally, bulbs like CFLs contain small amounts of mercury, which is safely handled and contained during the recycling process to prevent contamination of soils and waterways.

Residents are encouraged to visit productcare.org to find their nearest recycling location and to learn more about the types of lighting products accepted in the program.
