January 19-20 marks the opening ceremonies of the 2015 International Year of Light in Paris, but events will be taking place throughout the year and around the world. People of all ages and all backgrounds will gain an appreciation for the central role of light in science and culture, and as a cross-cutting scientific discipline that can advance sustainable development, say organizers.

Philips Lighting’s “city.people.light” Award 2014: See the Top 20 Entries

Organized by Royal Philips and the Lighting Urban Community International Association (LUCI), this annual international award recognizes urban lighting projects that best demonstrate creative efforts to integrate sustainable lighting infrastructure into city redevelopment initiatives. This year the competition had entries coming from all five continents, making the award contest truly global.

GE Calgary

Calgary Looks to Upgrade Street Lights to LED

Calgary is going with GE LED lighting for the first phase of a possible city-wide streetlight retrofit. The City of Calgary’s Department of Transportation is going with GE Lighting’s LED technology to replace and upgrade existing street light fixtures as part of a proposed city-wide retrofit that will see 80,000 street fixtures upgraded, dropping electricity consumption by 55 percent.
