Marine Industrial Lighting Systems Ltd Secures Build in Canada Innovation Program Contract
September 7, 2017
Marine Industrial Lighting Systems Ltd. of Mount Pearl has been awarded a contract of $906,000 under the federal government’s Build in Canada Innovation program (BCIP) to supply Naval LED lighting fixtures to the Canadian Navy’s Patrol frigates. The BCIP helps Canadian innovators land their first sale and get their innovations tested by the Government of Canada (GoC). This program is just one of the many ways the GoC supports innovation and small and medium-sized businesses across Canada.
According to Sid Cox, President of MILS, “This contract culminates many years of design consultations with the Navy, and significant investment in testing and development for these products. It represents a tremendous opportunity going forward as this product can become the standard for not only all new Canadian Navy vessels such as the JSS and CSC programs, but to other Navies worldwide. The initial installation is ongoing on board the Canadian Patrol Frigate Toronto in Halifax and is 90% complete. Upon successful completion of trials we look forward to future orders.”
Participation in the BCIP is a win-win for both Canadian businesses and federal government: businesses are better able to take the next step towards commercializing their innovation products (like the Naval Led lighting fixtures), and government departments get to test, assess and keep cutting-edge technology.
