Energere Wins Montreal Smart Public Lighting Control Project

Energere Wins Montreal Smart Public Lighting Control Project

August 25, 2017

Energere has won a major contract for the implementation of a smart public lighting management system for the City of Montreal.

The $28 million project will create an infrastructure capable of controlling 135,000 luminaires. By integrating this project into its sustainable development objectives, Montreal lays the foundation for a communication network architecture enabling the gradual integration of additional smart services.

The system will consist of radio modules called “nodes” attached to each luminaire, which will communicate with each other to form a network. Commands and data will be conveyed to the same network and transmitted to lighting management software through boxes called “gateways” located throughout the city region.

“Through such a system, the public will enjoy an improved lighting service that is safe and suited to the lifestyle of a large metropolitan city,” says Benoit Trottier, Project Director at Energere. “In fact, this smart management system will enable immediate intervention in case of luminaire breakage or malfunction, and by extension, better maintenance planning.”

Not only will inventories be managed more effectively, but the luminaires’ power consumption will be precisely monitored and the energy bill adjusted accordingly. These substantial advantages will allow Montreal to achieve significant energy savings, as well as optimize the management of the public lighting network. The latter will benefit from a scalable platform offering various functions, including the ability to adjust the lighting for special events or to announce certain services, such as snow removal.

In addition to requiring a single, scalable platform, the city raised the system’s technical and functional requirements by calling for the integration and implementation of three different smart control products.

As a technology integrator, Energere’s strategy was based on the integration of three industry-leading suppliers:

  • DimOnOff, a Quebec-owned company, specializing in lighting control systems which will supply the integration platform and management software, as well as 20% of the nodes and gateways
  • Current, powered by GE, which has a smart services development centre located in Montreal and will supply a 60% of the equipment
  • Telematics Wireless, which will supply 20% of the nodes and gateways

By undertaking this project, the city acquires a scalable and innovative platform capable of adapting to new technologies and future applications. The City of Montreal once again demonstrates its commitment to promote sustainable development and takes a big step forward towards the digital revolution.
