Remembering the old days in lighting
Today, lighting is an integral part of the future of building automation, we talk about it here, but lighting is also an integral part of art and architecture. This is why we are paying tribute to a designer who used his exceptional technical skill to mass-produce a fascinating objet d’art, a lamp. Future looks good according to the survey of our friend David Gordon, and the future also sees direct current emerging as a competitive power distribution option at the grid, which could be an advantage for DC-based LED lighting and controls. Good reading!

DC-based LED lighting
A Look at DC Microgrids
By Craig DiLouie
Direct current (DC) is emerging as a competitive or complementary power distribution option at the grid, community, and building level. Among the advantages for building owners is potential efficiencies in operating DC-based LED lighting and controls as well as plug-and-play sensor and controls installation, including networking that can unlock Internet of Things (IoT) applications. Due to these advantages coupled with greater resiliency in the event of a grid failure, microgrids are expected to grow to a $25 billion market by 2026 with a CAG of 24% between 2020 and 2024, according to Global Market Insights.

SMS Engineering's Bryan Smith on his Career and How Work Ethic Leads to Opportunity
By Blake Marchand
Bryan Smith started his now 20-year career at the ground floor, so to speak, as a draftsperson and worked his way to a senior position at SMS Engineering, one of the largest independently owned consulting engineering firms between Calgary and Toronto. “When I first started in the industry at the age of 20, it was a job to make ends meet. However, it did not take long for me to realize that I could make a career out of this. As a draftsperson I was exposed to a lot of different types of projects. Noticing patterns and how the devices had been laid out on previous projects helped me be more efficient and allowed me to help our designers with populating the floor plans with basic layouts as a draftsperson.”

Lighting market
Leading during a pandemic
The pulse of the lighting industry is strong.Channel Marketing Group’s recently concluded 2021 Q2 Pulse of Lighting survey, which was promoted earlier this month and attracted over 220 responses, revealed: Each channel audience is seeing the lighting product category growing, on average, high single digits with over 65% reporting sales growth of over 5%. Many are reporting double digit growth … some exceeding 20%. Similar, if not slightly higher, growth is expected in Q3. All segments of the market are rebounding due to the economy re-opening and recovery. While the small and mid-sized renovation markets continue to be strong...

Architectural lighting
Applying the Art to Architectural Outdoor Lighting
For an architect, a building is a work of art. But while that art looks great during the day, how do you enhance it to make it look great at night, so it’s not just a dark canvas? Ellen Godson LC, IES, a lighting design consultant with Lightspec Canada and member of The Illuminating Engineering Society, sees more and more building owners wanting to achieve just that. “Even with bridges, we see examples. The Jacques Cartier Bridge, in Montreal where light is not only used to highlight the columns and the structure, but also used to produce a nightly light show. It looks like fireworks and makes the water look like it’s dancing to music. All this is integrated into the lighting control.”

Testing, Standards and Certifications
- Products with Ultraviolet Radiation Testing and Certification
In the current global situation, questions surrounding sanitation, germicidal properties, and UV devices are more in focus than ever before. Safety considerations around the use of UV lighting and radiation are critical when so many new products are entering the markets of lighting, appliances, consumer products, healthcare and more. UVC radiation has sanitizing properties and has many uses in commercial, healthcare, and consumer settings. UVC has germicidal benefits, depending on exposure dose (based on strength, proximity and time). However, there are serious risks to UVC exposure, so safety precautions are essential.
- UL 8801 – The Journey from Outline to Standard
In 2018, UL was approached by a customer with a certification request for a PV-powered lighting system with four major subassemblies, each of which was to some extent eligible for its own independent certification. However, a few safety implications associated with the interactions between subassemblies were not adequately addressed by the individual standards and certification programs for those subassemblies.
- Signify Calls on EU to Accelerate Conversion to LEDs
In the EU, where lighting is estimated to be responsible for around 10% of all electricity use, findings by Signify reveal that by upgrading conventional luminaires to LED presents the union with a significant opportunity to help it achieve net zero carbon emissions in 2050. Such a switch will further help the 27 member states meet the goals of the European Green Deal and deliver on their commitments as part of the Paris Agreement.
