Many learning experiences
Want to avoid networked lighting control system (NLC) deployment pitfalls? Learn more on very simple precautions that, if taken beforehand, can help guarantee an extremely successful deployment of an NLC system. Nearly two decades ago, LED technology emerged in the commercial market. I’m certain you all remember all the talk about that technology at the beginning, insisting mostly on their incredible lifetime. Still no standard on it. Read a report that summarizes the literature on the subject. Wooden torches made of multiple sticks worked best for exploring caves or crossing wide spaces, since they projected light in all directions (up to almost six metres in experiments), were easy to transport, and didn't dazzle the torchbearer despite having a light intensity almost five times greater than a double-wicked grease lamp. Again, does this sound familiar? Learning from the past. Good reading!

Case study
IES Award of Merit: Samuel De Champlain Bridge
Spanning more than 3 km across the St. Lawrence River, this dramatic bridge has become a modern symbol of the thriving city of Montreal. As part of the design-build team, HLB spent more than 5 years developing a dynamic lighting design utilizing 7000+ luminaires in more than 45 universes of DMX control. Lighting designers worked closely with the structural engineering team to develop, refine, and execute the complex system that carries light along the structure’s entire length and up the inner faces of the cable-stay tower.

Avoiding Networked Lighting Control System Deployment Pitfalls
By Steve Mesh
My blog post from April 1, 2020, entitled Lessons Learned from Living Lab describes a research project about retrofitting existing spaces with networked lighting control systems (NLCs). It contains recommendations on how to avoid typical of problems that may be encountered on an NLC install. This post will elaborate on some of those “lessons” and recommendations. The discussion in the previous blog post centered around systems deployed in two of the four quadrants. Here’s a brief summary of the equipment in each.

The Conquest of the Dark Spaces: An Experimental Approach to Lighting Systems in Paleolithic Caves
Artificial lighting was a crucial physical resource for expanding complex social and economic behavior in Paleolithic groups. Furthermore, the control of fire allowed the development of the first symbolic behavior in deep caves, around 176 ky BP. These activities would increase during the Upper Paleolithic, when lighting residues proliferated at these sites. The physical peculiarities of Paleolithic lighting resources are very poorly understood, although this is a key aspect for the study of human activity within caves and other dark contexts…

- Luminaire Level Lighting Controls and The Future of Healthy Buildings
It could be argued that we have planned cities and constructed buildings to support human health for millennia. In our recent industrialized history, it is clear to see how the 1918 influenza pandemic sparked a design movement (Modernism) that was co-mingled with increased access to light and air, and elevated awareness of the value of connection to nature, all in an effort to minimize disease transmission [1]. As is often the case throughout human history, the pendulum swung back, as exemplified by the 1973-74 oil embargo and our collective reactions to reduce energy use and therefore force a disconnection with nature by closing the dampers on building ventilation, and shuttering windows [2]…
- New IEA 4E SSL Annex Literature Review offers insights into complex area of LED lifetime testing
A new report by the IEA 4E Solid State Lighting Annex provides a look across the body of literature on lifetime definitions for LEDs and LED products. The reports looks at failure mechanisms, accelerated life tests and test methods for estimating lifetime, and provides some recommendations. There is currently no agreement as to which test method can best estimate the lifetime of LED lighting products and the report thus addresses a key issue for regulators and industry interested in deployment of LED technologies.

- Kugler Ning Lighting Wins Two 2021 IESNYC Lumen Awards: A Lumen Award of Excellence and a Lumen Award of Merit by the IESNYC on June 17th, 2021
Located on a prominent corner of the Flatiron District, this 1894 Renaissance Revival church house is the new home for Fotografiska, a progressive museum of photography. The goal was to illuminate the architectural details and bring attention to this historically landmarked building. The museum operates until late at night and houses a first-floor bookshop-café, a second-floor restaurant, three levels of galleries, and a top-floor event space. To gain approval from the NYC Landmarks Preservation Commission, the team chose low-profile light fixtures, and the installation was detailed to prevent damage to the building. Custom finishes for fixtures and valances blend imperceptibly with the limestone façade…

- The Self-Disinfecting Room is Coming to an Office Near You
Imagine a self-contained office space. One that is smart enough to disinfect itself ahead of anyone using it so that it is virus and bacteria-free. Sounds too good to be true? Well, it actually exists, and it could be coming to an office near you. Muotolevy is a Finnish company that specializes in designing and installing soundproof wall systems and ceilings inside offices and other buildings. It is also well known for its range of self-contained cube-shaped pods used as focus rooms and small meeting rooms.
- The TALQ Family Continues to Grow
The TALQ Consortium, which developed the Smart City Protocol, a global interface standard for smart city device networks, passes the magic number of 50 member companies. The main reason for companies to join the consortium is to integrate the protocol into their smart city solutions and apply for certification. In parallel the number of TALQ partners, like cities and consultants, is also growing, which confirms that the Smart City Protocol’s reach is expanding further globally.
