EFC Scholarships: 4 Lighting Manufacturers Among Sponsors

GE Lighting, Osram Sylvania, Philips Lighting and RAB Design are among the many sponsors of the 2015 Electro-Federation Canada (EFC) Scholarship Program. This year, the program’s 20th, will award a record $120,500 across 52 scholarships. Find out more about these scholarships, and a new continuing education scholarship sponsored by Kerrwil, below. Application deadline: Midnight, May 31, 2015.

Joris Myny, Chair of Electro-Federation Canada (EFC)’s scholarship program and a senior vice president of Siemens Canada Limited, describes the scholarship program as more than funding students. “It is an opportunity to promote our industry in every Canadian university and college and showcase the electrical industry as a viable career choice in Engineering, Sales, Marketing, Finance, Management, Operations, Information Technology and Human Resources.”

Who’s eligible?

All applicants must be Canadian citizens who have completed at least their first year of study, maintained a minimum 75% average, and be registered in a full-time eligible post-secondary degree or diploma program at a recognized Canadian university or college. Applicants may apply for a total of only three scholarships. Some scholarships require EFC member affiliation; view membership list at www.electrofed.com/about/members.

Preference will be given to applicants pursuing post-secondary education in a discipline that targets a career in the electrical industry, such as Electrical Engineering, Electrical Technologist, Electrical Technician, Certified Electrical Technologist, Industrial Distribution, and Business Administration. For corporate scholarships, please refer to the eligibility criteria of the individual sponsors.

GE Lighting Canada Community Leadership Award – $3,500

The GE Lighting Canada Community Leadership Award will be granted to an undergraduate university student in either an engineering or business program who has completed at least their first year of study with a minimum cumulative average of 80% and has also established a commitment to community service through volunteerism. From jet engines to power generation, consumer products to industrial systems, and medical imaging to news and information, GE Lighting people worldwide are dedicated to turning imaginative ideas into leading products and services that help solve some of the world’s toughest problems.

Osram Sylvania Scholastic Achievement Award – $3,500

The Osram Sylvania Scholastic Achievement Award is granted to a university student who has completed at least the second year of study with a minimum cumulative average of 85%. Eligible fields of study include electrical and mechanical engineering and business administration. Osram Sylvania is one of the largest lighting manufacturers in the world and is committed to environmental responsibility through innovative and energy efficient lighting products and systems that deliver maximum performance without sacrificing the quality of light. The company sells products for homes, businesses and vehicles primarily under the Sylvania brand name, and also under the Osram brand. With Canadian headquarters in Mississauga, ON, Osram Sylvania is the North American operation of Osram AG, a wholly owned subsidiary of Siemens.

Philips Lighting Continuing Education Award – $3,500

The Philips Lighting Continuing Education Award will be granted to a college or university student who has completed at least one year of study in the electrical trade, engineering, IT or business disciplines. Applicants must be either a current employee or relative of someone currently employed within the Canadian electrical industry, including electrical distributors, electrical engineers, lighting specifiers, and electrical contractors. Philips Lighting is the Canadian and global leader in lighting providing lighting solutions, electronics and controls for the commercial, industrial, residential and institutional markets. RAB Design Lighting Award Of Excellence – $3,500

The RAB Design Lighting Award of Excellence is granted to a Canadian university or college student who has completed at least their first year of study in an electrical, electronics or mechanical engineering program. Students must demonstrate a minimum overall average of at least 75%. RAB Design Lighting Inc. is a Canadian owned and operated company servicing the electrical distribution market with quality products and exceptional service for more than 40 years. In addition to RAB Design’s broad range of HID and incandescent products, the company is committed to energy conservation with its extensive line of LED products.

Kerrwil’s J.W. Kerr Continuing Education Scholarship Award – $3,500

Kerrwil’s J.W. Kerr Continuing Education Scholarship Award is presented in the memory of Kerrwil’s founder J.W. (Jack) Kerr. The Kerrwil Scholarship Award is granted to a university or college graduate in a Canadian school who has completed at least their second year in an engineering or business program with a minimum cumulative average of 75% with a desire to drive forward in a marketing, product management role in the electrical industry. Applicants must be either a current employee or relative of someone currently employed within the Canadian electrical industry, including electrical wholesale, electrical equipment manufacturing representatives or electrical manufacturing. Founded in 1964, Kerrwil is the oldest privately held publishing company in Canada with a solid electrical industry focus, is a member of Magazines Canada, Canadian Business Media, and supports best practices in publishing. Kerrwil offers a broad range of career business positions including positions in marketing, database development, journalism, and management.
