Illuminating the Heroically Sized Google Spruce Goose Hangar into an Inspiring and Intriguing Workspace

June 12, 2023

Built by Howard Hughes in 1943 for the construction of the Hercules IV airplane (aka the “Spruce Goose”), the hangar now comprises workspace, meeting and event spaces, and employee amenity spaces.

Blending Historic Significance

High Ceiling Illumination with the Signum Series

Built by Howard Hughes in 1943 for the construction of the Hercules IV airplane (aka the “Spruce Goose”), the Google Spruce Goose hangar has undergone a remarkable transformation. Today, it comprises workspace, meeting and event spaces, and employee amenity areas, offering a truly inspiring and intriguing environment for Google employees.

In recognition of its exceptional design, the project received the prestigious 2020 AIA Interior Architecture Award, led by ZGF Architects and ARUP. One integral aspect of the design was the implementation of cutting-edge lighting solutions, with hundreds of Meteor’s Signum series luminaires illuminating the space. These luminaires not only deliver a powerful lumen package but also ensure a glare-free experience, enhancing the usability and functionality of this award-winning workspace.

Performance Matters

The Signum series offers a wide range of lumen packages, from 3,500 lm to 10,000 lm, allowing for consistent lighting design throughout the hangar, even at different mounting heights. This versatility ensures a visually attractive and unified space, where every corner is bathed in optimal lighting.

Enhanced Visual Comfort

To ensure enhanced visual comfort, the majority of fixtures were installed at a mounting height of 45 ft and above. A relatively narrow beam angle of 40 was specified to achieve an even distribution of light at the ground surface. Additionally, diffusers were added to a majority of fixtures, guaranteeing a diffused, glare-free illumination that creates an inviting and comfortable atmosphere. In some areas, a Honeycomb Louver was utilized, providing ideal lighting conditions tailored to the specific needs of different spaces within the hangar.

The attention to detail in the lighting design is evident, with custom finishes used to seamlessly blend the luminaires into the surroundings. A Grey Brown finish (RAL #8019) was chosen, directing attention away from the fixtures themselves and instead highlighting the majestic wooden beams that arch over the space, paying homage to the hangar’s historic significance.

With the integration of Meteor’s Signum series luminaires, the Google Spruce Goose hangar has been beautifully transformed into a space where functionality, aesthetics, and visual comfort harmoniously coexist. This exceptional lighting design plays a vital role in creating an inspiring workplace that reflects the innovation and forward-thinking ethos of Google.
